EPSB Trustee Sue Huff has decided not to run in the 2010 autumn election. Huff is the only EPSB trustee to use a blog to update readers on upcoming board agenda items and other educational-related items. On Monday, October 18, elections will be held for mayor, city councillors, and school board trustees. This year, the City of Edmonton will change from six wards to twelve for councillor representation. EPSB school board trustee wards remain at nine wards for the city. EPSB's decision to close five schools is not the end of the story. EPSB intends to review more than 70 schools next year and it is likely that many of these will also be voted for "consideration" of closure. In the meantime, the upcoming October Municipal Election will be this autumn. This election is an opportunity to elect city councillors and school board trustees. Consider running for school board trustee, or assisting with a candidate's campaign. Stay in touch with efforts to develop responsive, responsible trusteeship in Edmonton through ARTES' mailing list. You can also stay connected with the Community Schools Coalition. District7 will also continue to follow school closure issues. In a stunning upset, the EPSB board continued along exactly the same path as predicted. No schools were saved from the axe. (reposted from Community Schools.org) Affected students, parents and other people concerned about the proposal to close half of Edmonton's inner city schools and half of the schools in the Hardisty area will rally in advance of the crucial vote. When: Tuesday, April 13th, 5:15 to 5:45 p.m. Where: In front of EPSB Headquarters (sometimes called the Centre for Education or the Blue Building) at One Kingsway Avenue, across from the Royal Alexandra Hospital. Here is the timeline for the event: 5:00 - 5:15: Gathering on the sidewalk in front of the Blue Building. 5:15 - 5:25: Informal picket on public property. We will not be hindering access. 5:25 - 5:30: Hip hop preformance by inner city junior high students worried about their schools. 5:30 - 5:45: Short speeches featuring representatives from the affected areas: Alberta Avenue, Boyle-McCauley and Greater Hardisty.
